Get Involved

One way to protect your neighborhood trees is by joining your neighborhood association, civic association or garden club.

These neighborhood associations can assist by advocating for the protection of neighborhood trees with Tampa City Council’s elected officials as well as advocate for additional tree plantings.

Additionally, your neighborhood association can send a representative to attend the THAN meetings where all neighborhood and civic associations can unite in a common goal, eg. protect Tampa’s neighborhood trees and tree canopy.

THAN

Tampa Homeowners, An Association Of Neighborhoods, Inc

THAN’s objectives are:

To protect the interests of homeowners within the City of Tampa; to monitor government action which may affect residential neighborhoods; to disseminate information to its members in a timely manner and to recommend a course of action when needed.

Membership is limited to organized homeowner, neighborhood, and civic associations in the City of Tampa, including garden clubs; and is limited to not more than one representative from each group. A member association may designate an alternate THAN representative. Only one vote is permitted from each association.

An organized group shall be defined as one which elects officers, collects dues, and is chartered by the State of Florida.

Call the elected members of the Bay Area Legislative Delegation and ask them to introduce legislation which will repeal the tree-killing bill, HB 1159, euphemistically titled: Rights of Private Property Owners.
This destructive bill which was signed into law by Gov. DeSantis in July 2019, allows trees to be removed by potentially unscrupulous arborists or even landscape architects who can declare a tree to be removed on the basis of being ‘dangerous’ without any evidence.
The law also allows information about pending tree removals to be withheld from city officials or municipalities charged with protecting the city’s trees.
This destructive law presents a real danger to preserving the entire tree canopy of the state of FL.
